YOGA WITH THEBANSHEEYOGINI

Increase your mobility, decompress and relax with thebansheeyogini!

Hi, I’m Stephanie! I’m so glad you have landed here on my website! I am a passionate Yoga Instructor who teaches in my private home studio that is centrally located in Little India, Singapore.

I have carved out a space in my home and have kitted it out completely (think: yoga mats, yoga blocks & straps, yoga bolsters & blankets, yoga chairs, yoga wheels, aerial hammocks & even stall bars) so I can share all the insights about yoga, movement and mobility that I've learned along the way.

Browse below to learn more about me and my yoga practice, and if you feel so inclined, feel free to drop me a message if you'd like to know more or even to book a class with me!

MEET THEBANSHEEYOGINI

Welcome to the world of Yoga

I was diagnosed with an incurable, chronic autoimmune disease called Systemic Vasculities in 1996 and over the last 25+ years, I have been managing my condition with a combination of steroids and cytotoxic drugs. Like the tide, my condition has had ebbs and flows. In 2017, I suffered a debilitating relapse and was confined to a wheelchair. In my attempt to keep a positive outlook, I took that time as an opportunity to better understand my physical body, its limitations and strengths, and my mental psyche through a journey of self-discovery and introspection. When my body recovered, I signed up for a yoga class with the intention to rehabilitate my mind and body, and have not looked back since!

In 2020, wanting to deepen my yoga practice and knowledge, I enrolled in my first yoga teacher training course. Unwittingly, I found myself sharing my knowledge and yoga practice with friends and family, in hopes of aiding them with their movement and mobility. I find joy in being able to share my yoga practice through assisting and aiding people while witnessing them increase body awareness, build endurance, strength and flexibility, and move with mindfulness.

I am trained in classical Hatha Yoga and am a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT-200) accredited by Yoga Alliance. I am also certified to teach Yin Yoga, Chair Yoga, Wheel Yoga and Aerial Yoga. I am also a certified Inside Flow Silver Instructor.

As they say, the road of yoga is endless — it all starts with a pose and a thought and expands into a never-ending path of self-discovery and growth. I value each and every person who joins my classes and I look forward to helping you achieve your wellness goals.

WHEEL YOGA

Connect With Your Breath

Wheel Yoga stimulates the breath, opens the chest and shoulders, improves spinal flexibility, improves strength, and may even improve blood glucose levels and adrenal function.

Wheel Yoga classes are both fun and challenging. Introducing foundational yoga poses (asana) to a sequence of moves with the use of other props and the yoga wheel, a Wheel Yoga practice encompasses gentle backbends and balancing poses with the support of the yoga wheel.

HATHA YOGA

Aligning With Yourself

Hatha Yoga is a branch of yoga which uses physical techniques to preserve and channel the vital force or energy. The Sanskrit word हठ hatha literally means "force" thus alluding to a system of physical techniques.

A foundational yoga class* with a focus on alignment and breathwork, Hatha Yoga classes build concentration and endurance while gaining strength and flexibility holding yoga poses for a minute or so. A great multi-level class for beginners, intermediate to advanced practitioners, or even those new to yoga.

Hatha Yoga tends to be gentler and slower-paced than a Vinyasa or Power style class. If you are new to yoga, recovering from an injury, or are looking to decompress by moving slowly and mindfully, this style of yoga may be the perfect fit for you.

COUPLE'S YIN & SOUND BATH

Restore & Balance

A special couple's session,  introducing Yin Yoga moves to first relax the body followed by the use of repetitive notes at different frequencies to help reduce mind chatter and bring your focus away from your thoughts

This Yin Yoga & Sound Bath Class combination is like taking yourself to a 75-minute retreat, a perfect antidote to the busy city life. You will begin the class by introducing light movement of holding gentle Yin Yoga poses between 3-5 minutes which can help soften tight muscles and target the deep connective tissues of the body. Following which, you will lay wrapped in the healing sounds of Crystal Singing Bowls & Tibetan Singing Bowls washing over you.

The benefits of sound bathing go beyond just relaxation. Studies have linked sessions to physical and mental benefits and decreased symptoms associated with conditions such as chronic pain, insomnia, depression, and anxiety. During a sound bath, the sound practitioner aims to bring your brain waves into a theta state - state of deep relaxation detached from normal waking consciousness.

During the Inside Flow class, you gently move from one posture to another carried by the music, bringing you into a trance-like, almost meditative state.

AERIAL YOGA

Anti-Gravity Yoga: Level Up Your Workout

The Yoga hammock — which is one long piece of silk fabric — and the style name “Aerial Yoga” started appearing around 2011. Aerial Yoga combines traditional asana (the physical postures of Yoga) and Yoga philosophies with aerial arts. The silk hammock is hung from the ceiling to aid practitioners in forming shapes.

In an Aerial Yoga practice, you will be fully supported by the aerial silk hammock with the silks wrapping around particular body parts while keeping other parts of the body on the floor. Hanging fully or suspending individual body parts is believed to create traction and open your body more gently and intuitively than when you’re on the floor. The silk hammock also aids balance.

The practice of yoga with props is largely credited to B.K.S. Iyengar (1918–2014), who developed Iyengar Yoga. In addition to using the blocks, straps, blankets, and rope walls you may see at many studios, Iyengar would hang his students from the ceiling in yoga swings. The original swings were not like the colorful silk hammocks we see today. They were often made solely of ropes and would be padded with yoga mats or blankets. Antigravity yoga, as it was originally called, began to gain traction in the late 1990s. The first yoga swing, a collection of silk harnesses connected to handles and foot holdings, was purportedly created in the U.K. in 2001.

A combination of the arts and athletics, aerial yoga offers several physical and psychological benefits:

  • Improved flexibility, stability, and balance. A 2019 study observed that aerial athletes have exceptional flexibility, balance, and strength

  • Traction and joint decompression. Hanging upside down and inverting are said to decompress the joints, which can compress over time due to gravity and age.

  • Reduced risk factors for heart disease. While research on this style of yoga is limited, the most-cited study, conducted in 2016 by the American Council on Exercise (ACE), found significant reduction in the risk factors associated with cardiovascular heart disease.

  • Low to moderate intensity. The same ACE-commissioned study found that 50 minutes of aerial yoga can burn upwards of 300 calories, making it a form of low to moderate intensity exercise.

  • Improved mental health. A small study noted significant improvements in depression and stress levels when people practiced aerial arts for the love of movement. This seems to bode particularly well for aerial yoga, which applies yogic philosophies and is often less competitive and more accessible than a circus-based or formal acrobatics class.

Aerial Silk Hatha is multi-level with basic and intermediate climbs.

Beginners are welcome to join.

CHAIR YOGA

Adapt and Move

Chair yoga is suitable for people of all levels of fitness, beginners and advanced yogis alike. This type of yoga is gentler than others, as it is practiced sitting on a chair, or standing, using a chair for support, which helps with balance and minimises pressure on the lower joints such as the hips and knees. Chair yoga is adapted from traditional yoga and can be done while seated on a sturdy chair with no wheels.

This specialised class combines the use of a conventional yoga chair with traditional asanas. The chair enables longer holds of the postures and facilitates deeper stretching with ease and support. Some pranayama, chanting and meditation may be included.

This class is suitable for students with some yoga experience looking to increase the mobility of their bodies and have an invigorating experience.

Traditional yoga may improve strength in people of all ages. And according to a 2021 review, chair yoga can help older adults develop and maintain muscle strength. Researchers also found that chair-based exercise improves upper- and lower-body function. This is important because muscle mass declines with age.
